One of the most frustrating situations that you can find yourself in is to be the owner of a dog that will not obey your commands.  No matter how much you love your dog a disobedient dog can make you want to give up and find a new home for the dog.  If you have tried every other method of training there may still be hope for you to change your dog into the pet you have always wanted to have.  If all else has failed then it may be time to try an electronic dog training collar.

Electronic dog training collars apply a small electric shock to the dog when the dog is behaving in an unwanted manner.  This shock is controlled by the owner via a remote control.  The electric shock that the collar applies is not harmful and if used properly will not cause side effects.  The shock that is applied is about the same as static shock that you might get after walking across a carpet and then touching metal. The main purpose of the shock is not to injure the dog but to get its attention and modify its behavior.   The key to using an electronic dog training collar is to use it properly and consistently.

Electronic dog training collars can be used on any breed or size of dog.  They are not recommended for puppies under one year of age.  This is not because the shock is harmful it is because other training methods should be tried before you resort to an electronic shock collar.  Some brands of collars do not recommend that you use shock collars on dogs that weigh less than eight pounds.  If you do decide to use an electronic dog training collar do some research before you make your purchase to make sure that you get a collar that is suitable for your dog.  Another thing that you should do is to consult your veterinarian about which type of collar will be best for your dog.

After you have decided on which electronic dog training collar to purchase for your dog there are still some other things to consider.  First is to make sure that you purchase a model that allows you to adjust the intensity of the shock that is applied.  Many dogs will respond very well to the very lowest intensity.  Always start your training with the collar on the low setting and do not increase it unless the dog is not responding.  Secondly, be sure to follow all of the instructions that come with the collar.  Also, make sure that you are consistent with corrections.  If you correct a behavior one time and let it slide the next time, you are going to confuse the dog and create more problems than you solve.
