Why Dogs Bark

Because there are so many reasons a dog communicates vocally, it's important to identify the reason why your dog is barking before you attempt to use a no bark dog collar.

No bark dog collars are designed to eliminate excessive or nuisance barking. Please be sure that you've eliminated any physical reason that your dog may be barking or growling such as pain, anxiety or fear. Following is a brief explanation of the many reasons a dog may bark.

Dogs bark for a variety of reasons. From the time they are puppies, dogs instinctively vocalize in order to communicate with the other litter members, their mother and as they grow, they learn to communicate with humans in this way, as well.

Puppies typically whine or mew when hungry or cold. Louder cries can be brought on to indicate pain, frustration or even loneliness. Most of us that have had a puppy remember the early days of hearing our puppy whine in the middle of the night. This is perfectly normal and the puppy's way of communicating loneliness or anxiety.

As dogs get older, the vocal communication becomes fine tuned. Vocalization takes the form of grunting, whining, howling, growling and barking.

Some of the different ways dogs communicate are:

  • Howling as a result of loud noises or stimuli such as a siren or other dogs' barking.
  • Growling as a display of aggression or warning. Growling can also signify a desire to play. Body language is the key to understanding what the dog is trying to communicate.
  • Grunting is usually seen as a sign of contentment or of greeting.
  • Whining may be a sign of greeting or a means to get attention, but it may also indicate pain, frustration, loneliness or anxiety.

Many dogs are trained to bark as part of their jobs. Typical examples of this are watch dogs or dogs trained to herd.

Barking can also be used by a dog to get attention, to communicate a desire to play, as a means of identification to other dogs or because they are hungry or need to go out. Being excited, anxious, bored or lonely can also cause a dog to bark.

As noted earlier, it's important to understand the many reasons for your dog's barking and consider carefully if your dog's barking is excessive or if there is something important he is trying to communicate to you!

How do bark dog collars work?

No bark dog collars work by delivering a static correction to your dog when he barks. The correction is startling and distracting to the dog, but not harmful. Your dog's barking is detected by the bark control collar through vibration, a microphone or both.

Deluxe no bark dog collars offer multiple correction levels that will increase the shock level if your dog continues to bark. Most bark collars also feature a safety shut off feature, should your dog continue to bark after a preset amount of time.

An ultrasonic no bark dog collar doesn't  use shock to deter your dog's barking. Instead, it uses a high-pitched tone to distract your dog and stop the dog from barking.
